Office 2016 Issues Reading Fonts from fontvault

#1

Hi All!

I’m having an issue with a user that has SF 7 (18.2.4) on Sierra where when she launches Word, or Excel there are a load of errors thrown in the console about not being able to read some fonts, and it slows down the start up of the apps to around 2 minutes. In Outlook it would not allow her to attach any files, or open any attachments. As soon as I cleared her font caches, she was back in business until the font database was rebuilt. She has a lot of fonts, but only a handful that are activated. And the ones that are activated do come up in the logs, but so do a bunch of others. Has anyone seen this before? Since clearing the caches, Outlook is running fine, but Word/Excel are exhibiting issues.

Here is a snippet of one of the logs:

I removed their username for privacy reasons, and as you can see it isn’t just one font. I was trying to find a way to NOT have office apps read from the fontvault, but haven’t been successful.

Thanks for any and all replies!

Hi!

This is likely due to an issue with Sandboxing:

https://developer.apple.com/app-sandboxing/

There is a lot of technical information if you are interested.

There seems to be an upper limit on the number of active files you can have open at any one time. So those errors are from the OS disallowing the opening of any more files (thus you can’t save or attach files, etc.).

There is a link here: https://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1316835 talking about similar issues.

So the best thing to do for this user would be to limit the number of fonts they have activated at any one time. I would check to make sure they don’t have a bunch of fonts in their User or Library fonts folder as well they may have permanently activated a lot of fonts over time.

So short answer, this is the OS not allowing any more files to be opened, etc. and is a result of Word being a sandboxed application.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Clint. I’ll do some testing today with moving fonts out, etc. Just wondering why the errors are showing that it’s reading fonts from the fontvault and that’s where it’s having issues. Does Word auto-integrate with Fusion since there is no direct plug-in? Curious how Word knows to go there to read fonts instead of just the standard user and system font folders.

I’ll report back what I find.

Thanks again!

I do see how you can create an application set for specific non-plug-in’d apps so maybe an app set with just basic fonts will work as well (?). Worth a shot. If I could stop word from going through and reading the fontvault I’d be set. Just drop the fonts the user ‘must’ have in their user font folder and call it a day.
